Allergies are an abnormally high sensitivity to certain substances, such as pollens, foods, or microorganisms. These substances are referred to as allergens. For someone with allergies, their own immune system is overreacting to these relatively harmless substances. Allergen can trigger an immune response from breathing or touching the allergen, by ingestion in a food or beverage, or from injection of medication. Common indications of allergy may include sneezing, itching, and skin rashes.
